Mulan Movie Night

To celebrate our completion of the Book of Romans, we’re getting together for another movie night. This time we’ll be seeing Mulan at Century DOCO and XD!

When the Emperor of China issues a decree that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Army to defend the country from Northern invaders, Hua Mulan, the eldest daughter of an honored warrior, steps in to take the place of her ailing father. Masquerading as a man, Hua Jun, she is tested every step of the way and must harness her inner-strength and embrace her true potential. It is an epic journey that will transform her into an honored warrior and earn her the respect of a grateful nation…and a proud father. “Mulan” features a celebrated international cast that includes: Yifei Liu as Mulan; Donnie Yen as Commander Tung; Jason Scott Lee as Böri Khan; Yoson An as Cheng Honghui; with Gong Li as Xianniang and Jet Li as the Emperor. The film is directed by Niki Caro from a screenplay by Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver and Elizabeth Martin & Lauren Hynek based on the narrative poem “The Ballad of Mulan.”

GATHER: The Grid Christmas Party

Sport your ugliest Christmas sweater and join us for The Grid’s first annual Christmas Party!

We’re asking that guests bring a festive appetizer or dessert and a gift for the White Elephant Gift exchange with a value of no more than $15.

A White Elephant Gift Exchange is a popular Christmas event where people vie to walk away with the best present. Here are the basic rules:

  1. Each player brings one wrapped gift (valued at no more than $15) to contribute to a common pool.

  2. Players draw numbers to determine what order they will go in.

  3. Players sit in a circle or line where they can see the gift pile.

  4. The first player selects a gift from the pool and opens it.

  5. The following players can choose to either pick an unwrapped gift from the pool or steal a previous player’s gift. Anyone who gets their gift stolen in this way can do the same – choose a new gift or steal from someone else.

  6. After all players have had a turn, the first player gets a chance to swap the gift he or she is holding for any other opened gift. Anyone whose gift is stolen may steal from someone else (as long as that person hasn’t been stolen from yet). When someone declines to steal a gift, the game comes to an end.

Please RSVP by texting or calling Danielle at (916) 719-1512. Because this will be held at the private residence of one of our Grid members, we will provide the address for the party upon RSVP.

Merry Christmas from The Grid, we hope you’ll join us!

Social Event: Concerts in the Park

In addition to our monthly service project, we get together regularly for social gatherings, which include game nights, catching a movie, and attending local events. This month, we’re planning on attending Concerts in the Park, a FREE music series featuring popular musicians that’s held Friday nights during May, June, and July at Cesar Chavez Park in Downtown Sacramento.

Concerts in the Park is put on by the Downtown Sacramento Partnership and booked and promoted by Andy Hawk, Justin Nordan, Jake Desrochers, and Laith Kayali.

On June 21st, Concert in the Park’s signature show will feature Swedish folk/pop band, Smith & Thell, consisting of Maria Jane Smith and Victor Thell.
